Estimate error impact. What percentage of manually-handled data contains errors? What does it cost to find and fix them? What problems do they cause before they’re caught? Even rough estimates illuminate costs that are otherwise invisible.
Add opportunity cost. What could these people be doing instead? What’s the value of the work that isn’t getting done?
For most organizations, this exercise reveals costs significantly higher than expected. The friction that seemed minor turns out to be a substantial budget line hidden in plain sight.
Deciding Where to Invest
Not every integration gap is worth closing. Some manual processes handle low-volume, low-frequency work where automation wouldn’t pay back. The goal isn’t eliminating all manual work; it’s directing integration investment to the highest-impact gaps.
Prioritize based on:
Volume and frequency. High-volume, frequent data movement costs more in labor and creates more error exposure. Automating daily processes yields more return than automating monthly ones.
Error sensitivity. Gaps in processes where errors cause significant downstream problems (financial data, customer records, inventory counts) deserve priority over gaps where errors are easily caught and corrected.
Strategic importance. Gaps that block visibility or constrain strategic initiatives matter more than gaps in stable, non-critical processes.
Integration feasibility. Some systems connect easily through APIs or standard connectors. Others require custom development. The cost of closing the gap affects the ROI calculation.
Starting the Conversation
